Orangutans and Palm Oil
Palm oil is an edible vegetable oil obtained from the fruit of the
African oil palm tree. Currently most palm oil is grown in Borneo
and Sumatra. It is found in many foods, cosmetics
and bath products.
Fires are being set to clear land for palm oil plantations,
which are destroying orangutan habitats. Many orangutans
die when they are unable to escape the fires. Unfortunately,
orangutans live in areas that are favored for establishing oil
palm plantations. They have lost their food sources to the
palm oil plantations.
Palm oil can be a more environmentally friendly source of
vegetable oil than other edible oil crops, but only if it is
produced sustainably. When palm oil is produced at certified
sustainable plantations and mills, high conservation value
(HCV) areas are protected, which includes areas where orangutans are found.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is an organization with many members that produce, process and use palm oil. RSPO implements strict certification standards for sustainable palm oil. Their members are required to abide by RSPO principles and guidelines.
